The History of Santa’s Reindeer Names
Why Santa’s Reindeer Are Called Dasher, Dancer, Prancer and More
As December arrives at the North Pole, excitement fills every snowy street, workshop, and stable throughout Santa’s Village.
For us Elves — and for our beloved reindeer companions — this marks the beginning of the most important and magical season of the entire year.
After the frightening attempts by the Dokkalfar to poison the reindeer earlier this year, we are deeply thankful that every single one of them survived. Following several weeks of rest and recovery, almost all have now regained their strength and appear more determined than ever to fulfil their Christmas duties.
Their courage and resilience have inspired everyone across the North Pole.
The Reindeer Choose Christmas
One thing humans often misunderstand is that the reindeer are not forced to serve Santa Claus.
They choose this life willingly.
The reindeer live and work alongside the Elves entirely of their own free will, dedicating themselves to the magic of Christmas because they believe in it just as deeply as we do.
Without them, the entire North Pole operation would simply cease to function.
And so, December is just as important to the reindeer as it is to the Elves. It represents the culmination of an entire year of training, preparation, discipline, and hard work.
For many reindeer, there is no greater honour than earning a place on one of the Christmas Eve sleigh teams.
Santa’s Reindeer Teams Explained
Most humans are familiar with the famous lead reindeer team that pulls Santa’s sleigh around the world on Christmas Eve.
However, very few realise that there are actually multiple reindeer teams operating throughout the night.
Alongside Santa’s main sleigh team are additional support teams responsible for transporting Elves, supplies, and replacement presents to secret reload locations across the globe.
As Santa journeys through the night delivering gifts, he meets these support teams at carefully hidden locations to refill his sleigh before continuing his mission.
Without these teams, delivering Christmas to the entire world in a single night would be impossible.
The True History of Santa’s Reindeer Names
Humans around the world know the legendary names:
- Dasher
- Dancer
- Donder
- Blitzen
- Comet
- Cupid
- Prancer
- Vixen
But what many people do not realise is that these were not simply random names chosen for Santa’s reindeer.
These names belonged to the original eight reindeer who pulled Santa’s sleigh on the very first Christmas Eve centuries ago.
That original team earned legendary status amongst reindeer-kind and eventually retired long ago after many years of loyal service.
However, in honour of their extraordinary achievement, the names were never retired.
Instead, each title continues to exist as a ceremonial position within Santa’s lead sleigh team.
A Title Earned Through Excellence
Today, the North Pole’s finest reindeer compete each year for the honour of becoming the next Dasher, Dancer, Blitzen, or Prancer.
To earn one of these names is considered one of the greatest achievements any reindeer can accomplish.
It represents courage, speed, endurance, intelligence, magical flying ability, and complete dedication to the spirit of Christmas.
Only the very best are chosen.
Preparing for Christmas Eve
As Christmas approaches once again, the reindeer teams continue their preparations deep within the snowy training grounds of the North Pole.
Every flight path is practised.
Every sleigh manoeuvre perfected.
Every team member trained tirelessly for the long night ahead.
And while humans may only glimpse Santa’s sleigh for a fleeting moment on Christmas Eve, behind that magical journey lies an entire world of teamwork, honour, and centuries-old tradition.
The reindeer would accept nothing less.
