The Iron Reindeer: Santa’s Secret Underground Railway

The Iron Reindeer

The Secret Railway Beneath the World

In the late 1700s, as the Human World entered the height of the Industrial Revolution and populations began to grow rapidly, life at the North Pole was changing too.

For centuries, Santa’s sleigh teams and hardworking reindeer had travelled vast distances to collect the raw materials needed to create toys. But as demand increased across the world, it became clear that reindeer alone could no longer keep pace.

The nearest settlements were still more than 500 miles away from Santa’s Village, and transporting enough wood, metal, fabric, and supplies through deep snow and freezing conditions was becoming almost impossible.

Something new was needed.

And so began one of the greatest engineering projects in North Pole history.

The Birth of the Iron Reindeer

The Elves designed an extraordinary new machine — a steam-powered engine capable of pulling long chains of cargo cars across the frozen wilderness.

It became known as The Iron Reindeer, named in honour of the loyal reindeer teams whose work it would now support.

In its earliest years, the railway travelled across the icy surface of the Arctic to a hidden station near the closest human settlement. But as the Human World expanded and toy production increased year after year, the limitations of surface travel soon became clear.

Snowdrifts buried the tracks.

Blizzards froze the rails.

Even the enormous snowplough mounted to the front of the train could not fully solve the problem.

The North Pole needed a better solution.

Beneath the Ice

In the 1850s, work began on an ambitious new idea:

The Iron Reindeer would travel beneath the ice… and deep underground.

To achieve this, Santa turned to the Gnomes — ancient underground dwellers who had spent thousands of years building vast tunnel networks beneath the Earth’s surface.

Living in hidden underground towns connected by enormous caverns and roads, the Gnomes were the greatest miners and tunnel builders the world had ever known. Their knowledge of underground engineering was unmatched.

When the Elves asked for their help in building a secret underground railway, the Gnomes gladly agreed.

To them, it was simply another day’s work.

A Hidden Global Network

Construction began with the first Iron Reindeer Station at the North Pole.

From there, tunnels stretched outward to the great cities of the age, including London and Paris. Over the decades that followed, the network expanded further and further beneath both land and sea.

New stations were added across the globe.

Hidden tunnels connected continents.

And gradually, an invisible transport system was created beneath the Human World itself.

In fact, construction has never truly stopped.

The newest station opened only this year.

The Railway Today

While the original Iron Reindeer trains were powered by steam, today the railway uses a highly advanced magnetic drive system — similar to the technology used in the Sleigh Pods throughout Santa’s Village, but far more powerful.

The network now allows the North Pole to transport:

  • Raw materials
  • Magical supplies
  • Gifts and toys
  • Elves and other beings

…across the entire world completely unseen.

Without the Iron Reindeer, Christmas operations at the North Pole would simply not function.

The Most Guarded Secret at the North Pole

For more than 200 years, the Iron Reindeer has remained one of Santa’s most valuable assets.

Because of its importance, the entrances, tunnels, and station locations are protected by extremely strict security measures.

At the North Pole, the railway emerges from beneath the ice at the hidden Iron Reindeer Station, located just outside the main industrial district of Santa’s Village.

Very few are ever permitted near it.

And even fewer know where the tunnels truly lead…
